Fall Is a Season of Letting Go: What Are You Still Carrying?
There is something about fall that naturally makes us think about change.
The leaves begin to turn. The days get shorter. Summer schedules give way to routines, responsibilities, school, work, and the realization that another year is moving faster than we expected.

Nature seems to make letting go look easy.
But for us? Letting go can be a little more complicated.
Sometimes we carry things much longer than we realize — an old hurt, a difficult relationship, guilt over a decision, expectations we placed on ourselves, grief, disappointment, or even a version of our life that simply didn't turn out the way we thought it would.
Fall can be a good time to ask yourself:
What am I still carrying that may be weighing me down?
Letting Go Doesn't Mean Forgetting
When people hear the words “let it go,” it can sound dismissive.
If only it were that simple.
Letting go doesn't mean pretending something didn't happen. It doesn't mean forgetting someone you loved, excusing someone who hurt you, or deciding that something difficult suddenly doesn't matter.
Instead, letting go can mean recognizing that something from your past is continuing to affect your present.
Maybe you replay a conversation over and over in your head.
Maybe you continue to blame yourself for something you wish you had handled differently.
Maybe you're holding onto anger because it feels safer than allowing yourself to acknowledge the hurt underneath it.
Or maybe you've simply become so accustomed to carrying something that you no longer realize how heavy it has become.
Sometimes We Hold Onto Expectations, Too
Not everything we carry comes from a painful event.
Sometimes it's an expectation.
Where did you think you would be by this point in your life?
Maybe you thought your career would look different. Your relationship would be different. Your family would be different. Your finances would be different.
Maybe you thought you would be different.
Comparing the life we have to the life we thought we would have can create frustration, disappointment, and a feeling that we're somehow falling behind.
Part of emotional wellness can be learning to acknowledge those expectations while also making room for where we actually are today.
That doesn't mean giving up on goals.
It means allowing yourself to move forward without constantly measuring your present against an old picture of what life was “supposed” to look like.
Fall Can Be an Opportunity to Check In
We often think of January as the time for reflection and fresh starts, but fall offers its own natural opportunity to pause.
Before the holidays arrive and the end-of-year rush begins, take a moment to check in with yourself.
How are you really doing?
Is there something taking up more emotional energy than you realized?
Are you holding yourself to an expectation that no longer fits?
Is there a relationship or situation where you need healthier boundaries?
Are you giving yourself permission to rest, or do you feel guilty whenever you slow down?
You don't have to solve everything at once.
Sometimes simply recognizing what you're carrying is the first step.
You Don't Have to Work Through Everything Alone
Some experiences are difficult to unpack by ourselves.
Therapy can provide a safe, supportive space to explore patterns, experiences, emotions, and expectations that may be affecting your life today.
The goal isn't for someone else to tell you what you should “get over.”
It's about understanding yourself more clearly, developing healthier ways of responding to difficult emotions, and deciding what you want to carry forward — and what may no longer need to come with you.
At Mosaic Pathway Counseling, therapy is centered around the individual. Approaches such as client-centered therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and EMDR may be incorporated based on each person's experiences and needs.
What Do You Want to Carry Into the Next Season?
The trees don't lose their leaves because the leaves never mattered.
They let them go because it's time to make room for what's next.
As we move into fall, maybe you don't need a complete reset or a long list of things you need to change.
Maybe you simply need a moment to ask:
What do I want to carry with me into this next season — and what am I ready to begin putting down?
If you've been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or ready to work through something you've been carrying, Mosaic Pathway Counseling is here to help.
